COMMON QUESTIONS
Retirement plan design is the process of structuring a qualified retirement plan to meet an employer’s specific goals. This includes selecting the plan type, defining eligibility rules, setting vesting schedules, determining contribution formulas, and establishing funding commitments. A well-designed plan balances employer cost, employee benefit, and compliance with IRS and DOL requirements.
Plan design refers to the decisions made about how a plan is structured, including its type, rules, and contribution formulas. Plan administration is the ongoing work of running the plan: processing contributions, performing compliance testing, filing Form 5500, and keeping records current. Nydia handles both, which means your plan stays aligned with its original intent as it operates year to year.
Yes. Plans can be amended and restated to reflect new business goals, workforce changes, or ownership structures. A redesign may involve updating eligibility rules, changing contribution formulas, adding a new plan type like a Cash Balance layer, or fully restating documents on the IRS remedial amendment cycle. Nydia conducts plan reviews and manages the full redesign process.
A qualified retirement plan requires an IRS-approved plan document and trust agreement, a Summary Plan Description (SPD) for participants, and in some cases a plan EIN. Nydia prepares and manages all required plan documents as part of the setup and implementation process.
Timeline depends on plan type and complexity. A straightforward 401(k) plan can often be established within a few weeks. Defined Benefit and Cash Balance plans, or plans requiring actuarial design, typically take longer. Nydia manages the timeline and coordinates with all parties to keep the process on track.
A plan restatement is a full rewrite of the plan document to incorporate all prior amendments and bring the document into compliance with current IRS requirements. The IRS requires restatements on a recurring cycle, typically every six years for defined contribution plans. Nydia manages restatements on behalf of plan sponsors.
Defined Benefit and Cash Balance plans require actuarial certification and ongoing actuarial services. Nydia has in-house Enrolled Actuaries who handle all actuarial design, valuation, and certification work. This is an advantage over TPA firms that outsource actuarial services, as it keeps plan design and actuarial strategy fully integrated.
